Simulation Supports The Innovation Process Of The Bayerische Milchindustrie eG

Founded in 1952, BMI Bayerische Milchindustrie eG is headquartered in Landshut and currently has 28 milk supply cooperatives and dairies as members. As one of the leading German dairy companies, BMI processes more than 940 million kilograms of milk and just over two billion kilograms of whey annually at its six production sites in Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt. The export share is 46.8 percent. BMI is thus one of the largest producers of whey-based ingredients in Germany; cheese production is also a key pillar. Consumers are food retailers, the processing industry and specialist wholesalers. With almost 1,100 employees, the company generates an annual turnover of around 725 million euros (2021).

The use of extensive multi-product plants, a highly raw material-driven production and the high demands of the food industry present BMI with complex challenges in production and plant planning. As an innovation-driven company, it recognized the potential of using process simulation in the food industry and contacted INOSIM in spring 2022.

After a training in May, conducted by INOSIM Consulting GmbH in Dortmund, a pilot project to model the BMI site Zapfendorf was started. The core team of the project consisted of two employees from BMI. They were supported by a simulation expert from INOSIM Consulting for complex questions in regular remote meetings and thus quickly gained in-depth knowledge in modeling with INOSIM during the course of the project.

The results of the simulation project can be used for capacity and bottleneck analysis at BMI in the future. For a perspective, the model can be used for scenario simulation in plant engineering or be expanded to support production planning. Due to the very good cooperation, BMI plans to continue the cooperation in the near future.
