ESTAD (European Steel Technology & Application Days) is the leading European conference for technology in the steel industry. The fifth meeting took place from 8/30 to 9/2/2021 mainly as an online conference, also as a partial live event in Sweden’s capital Stockholm. The conference focused on iron making, steelmaking, rolling and forging, steel materials and their application, additive manufacturing, surface technologies, Industry 4. 0 as well as environmental and energy aspects.
INOSIM was represented at the conference with a lecture about the analysis of steel production processes with the help of our process simulation software. Torsten Mosebach reported on our results from the EmKus research project: Concepts for energy saving in steel production were developed there. Based on existing models for material flow simulation, the project developed specific model elements for processes and plants in the steel industry.
After the prerecorded presentations of the session had been completed, an intense discussion on various topics regarding the general application of simulation for steel mills, data generation for AI support tools and energy savings through combination of different converter setups took place. Thereby, the overall conclusion about the value and benefit of simulation support in strategic plant design as well as in operation support got obvious. Finally, let us hope to have the ESTAD back as an live event soon to have even more space and chances for deeper discussion with the interested audience.
