Innovation Platform KEEN

Artificial Intelligence Incubator Laboratories In The Process Industry

The KEEN innovation platform connects 20 partners consisting of industrial companies and scientific institutions with the objective to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and methods in the process industry and to evaluate and implement their technical, economical, and social potential. The KEEN consortium investigates the implementation of AI methods in the process industry regarding the following three topics:

  • Modelling of processes, product features, and plants
  • Engineering of plants and processes
  • Operation optimization and the implementation of self-optimizing plants

Up-to-date AI technology for batch production support with INOSIM

The KEEN platform has the objective to substantially improve the efficiency of all engineering and production activities along the product life cycle via the implementation of AI methods. Within KEEN, INOSIM is developing a batch production support system that harnesses modern AI methods and the established INOSIM simulation software suite to provide adaptive real-time predictions that will make the complex behavior of modern batch plants transparent to the plant operators and production managers. These high-quality predictions are essential for increased plant safety and efficiency (e.g., by allowing for more accurate production and maintenance planning), and they will enable significant financial and resource savings (e.g., by avoiding plant shutdowns due to accurate forecasting of the effects of disturbances and breakdowns). AI will be employed to systematically predict the current state of the batch production system from incomplete measurements for the accurate initialization of the simulation model, and to “enrich” our new Foresight solution for predictive decision support with advanced capabilities for golden batch identification and optimization. The system will be validated and demonstrated on a real-world production plant of industrial cooperation partner Merck.

The KEEN project started in April 2020 and will run for 3 years. KEEN is one of the winners of the Innovation Competition Artificial Intelligence that provides support for the development of AI-based platform concepts. It is in part funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
